Dr. Michel Brazeau, MD, FRCPC

Dr. Michel Brazeau
was the former
Chief Executive Officer of The Royal College
of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is also Chair of the Steering
Committee of Task Force Two: A Human Resource Strategy for Physicians
in Canada.
Prior to accepting his current position in 1998, Dr. Michel Brazeau was
Director for Health Policy, and Director of the Office for Continuing
Medical Education, of the Federation of Medical Specialists of Quebec.
From 1982 to 1993, Dr. Michel Brazeau was Director of the Quebec Public
Health Laboratory, an arm’s length operation of the Ministry
of Health responsible for quality management in laboratory medicine
and public health.
Dr. Michel Brazeau is a medical microbiologist and infectious disease
physician, having studied in these fields at the Université
de Montréal, Institut Pasteur de Paris and teaching
hospitals associated with these Institutions. He practised and taught
his specialty from 1970 to 1982, while directing the Departments
of Medical Microbiology, first at the McGill University-affiliated
Montreal Children’s Hospital, then at the Université
de Montréal-affiliated Hôpital Notre Dame. He was visiting
professor at the Faculté de médecine de Sousse
in Tunisia in 1977-78. President of the Quebec Association of Medical
microbiologists and infectious disease physicians for 7 years, he
has also chaired several national consensus conferences in this
field and directed or acted as a consultant for several government-led
and other professional initiatives.
Strategy development and implementation are currently his major
fields of interest.

Dr. Nick Busing, MD, CCFP, FCFP

Co-Chair, Analysis and Strategy Development
Head of family medicine at the University of Ottawa, Nick Busing
graduated with a B.A. from Bishop’s University in 1968 and
an M.D. from Queen’s University in 1972. He became a Certificant
in Family Medicine in 1974 and a CFPC Fellow in 1985.
Dr. Busing began his medical career at the Flemingdon Health Centre
in Toronto. Then, after a year of travel abroad, he joined a large
community practice in Aylmer, Quebec for three years. After a further
year spent practising family medicine at an Ottawa community health
centre, Dr. Busing joined a colleague’s downtown Ottawa practice
for an additional five years. Dr. Busing joined the Department of
Family Medicine at the University of Ottawa in 1986. From 1993 to
1996, he held the position of Dean, Postgraduate Affairs (the only
Postgraduate Dean in Canada to have come from Family Medicine) before
becoming the Chair of the department. Recently, he completed a four-year
term as the Chair of the Canadian Medical Forum.
In addition to maintaining his practice, Dr. Busing continues his
work with the College of Family Physicians of Canada. He also serves
on numerous committees at the University of Ottawa, the Council
of Faculties of Medicine in Ontario and with the Ministry of Health.
Dr. Hugh Scully, MD, M.SC., FRCS(C), FACS
Past-President, Canadian Medical Association
Co-Chair, Communications
In addition to his role as spokesperson for Task Force Two, Dr.
Hugh Scully is senior cardiac surgeon at the Toronto General Hospital
and professor of surgery at the University of Toronto. He is also
past-president (1999-2000) of the Canadian Medical Association.
Dr. Scully, an active and vocal representative of his profession,
is well known in the medical community and is involved in medical
politics at provincial, national and international levels. Having
earned his medical degree at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario,
Dr. Scully’s training in cardiac surgery took him to hospitals
affiliated with the University of Toronto and Harvard University.
He was also former Chief of Staff and Trustee, former Chair for
Medical Education and Surgical Education and Deputy Surgeon-in-Chief
at the Toronto (General) Hospital.
Some of Dr. Scully’s past appointments include terms as
Founding President of the Professional Association of Interns and
Residents of Ontario, Chief Negotiator for the Ontario Medical Association
(OMA) in contract dealings with the provincial government and President
of the OMA. He has represented the profession on the Ontario Health
Review Panel, was an original member of the Premier's Council on
Health Care for the Province of Ontario and was a member of the
Ontario Task Force on the Funding and Delivery of Medical Care.
At the national level, Dr. Scully was President of the Canadian
Cardiovascular Society, representing all heart specialists in Canada.
He was a member of the CMA Board of Directors and Executive and
chaired the CMA's Council on Health Policy and Economics and the
Working Group on the Future of Health Financing. He also sat on
the CMA's National Physician Human Resource Committee. Dr. Scully
was a member of Council (Surgery) with the Royal College of Physicians
and Surgeons of Canada where he chaired the Physician Workforce
Committee. Dr. Scully is the only non-American member of the Health
Policy Advisory Committee of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and
the American Association of Thoracic Surgery.
Recently, he was appointed as a member of the Vascular Committee
on Cardiovascular Surgery of the American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Scully represents Canada sitting on the Council (Board) for
the World Medical Association and is chair of the committee examining
the international migration of physicians.
